Ant New Haven Chime Clock No 1 Running 8 Bell Westminster Chimes Mahogany Case

Antique New Haven Chime Clock No 1 Running? 8 Bell Westminster Chimes Repeater Clock Nice Mahogany Case see Tran Ly's New Haven book, page 400. Here is a great Antique New Haven Chime No. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself!

Beautiful American mahogany case clock here. The maker is New Haven of the United States. Just before Sonora came out with their bell strike/chime clocks that were then acquired by Seth Thomas, New Haven had invented their own. And unlike the ST's with two movements or the European versions that were fusee driven, the New Haven clock was 1 movement and not fusee driving. This one a a gold bell shaped unit with pins on it driven from a shaft in the middle of the movement that operates the chimes unit's strike hammers. No maker markings on the movement or the face of the clock which was typical for this maker.

This is a repeater clock. Has a knob at the top for the strike and knob on the side for the chimes.

The repeater knob for the strike operates, not the chime knob. The wood case is not all there. The top trim on the front door is missing. On the top, the two back finials and the wood pieces they sit on are not present.

Shows some minor finish loss most notably along the corner edges, still looks good. Great curved top on the clock case with the decorative metal trim piece in place.

Beveled glass in the front wood door, no cracks or blistering. The four brass look legs are in place and look original to the clock. Nice detailing to the mahogany case on the front, sides and especially the top of it. Has a dark brownish black stain to it. The rear door is securely attached to the case. The wood trim side pieces are in place and a reddish pink replacement fabric is in place to allow the beautiful sound of the clock to be heard. A split in the top piece of wood of the case at the back, carries down about 2 on the left side. Top trim piece on left side is a little loose. We have only wiped down the wood case with Murphy's wood cleaner and orange oil, could still used a good cleaning to bring the original beauty of this piece out to its' full potential. The case is still very dirty still and needs a couple more good cleanings. Nice looking face on this clock. Silver colored ring with black numbering, some minor finish loss. Then an back piece that is gold and has a beautiful incised design on it. The gold colored clock hands match and look appropriate to the clock.

The hand to turn the chime on and off works as does the time adjustment component, the silent plate is missing on the face. The arrow to adjust the speed of the clock is in place, the plate below it is missing. Great looking 8 day brass movement on this clock.

The clock movement has a great beat to it with the pendulum off and on it. Nice brass pendulum bob that has some weight to it.

The hanger for the bob needs to have the suspension spring replaced, so cannot determine if running yet. The clock movement does chime and strike as expected when run manually. One of the strike hammers for the bells was repaired sometime in the past. The nine strike rods and hammers are in good shape. The three wind springs feel sound when keyed.

The clock will come with a wind key. This clock will be going out to our Clock Doc for servicing in the near future, if one of you does not acquire in the meantime.

This was definitely a quality clock for its' time. The rear door is still firmly attached to the case.

The latch for the rear door is still there and operates. The hinges look appropriate on the front and rear doors. We think there was a wood plate in the back door originally, not the glass that is there now. The clock stands 18" tall, by 11.5" across, by 9.5 wide.

The clock face is 7 across. You will not find such a fine example of this clock maker's work available very often, so do not miss this one. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well. With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description.

If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, I would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art. They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks.
