8 Bell, 5 Gong Chime Bracket Clock. Runs Strikes & Chimes, Lever Option. Latter 1800s to Early 1900s. A Homage to Winterhalder & Hofmeier Movements. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep for yourself!
This is actually a Lorenz Furtwangler Sohne clock from Furtwangen, Germany. We have researched the internet for another one of these clocks thru previous sales or sites that show examples of different clock models. Very few of these clocks seem to have ever been made. So, this clock seems quite rare and unique in the marketplace! This clock was most likely made in latter 1800s to early 1900s. "64" is noted on the bottom middle of the back plate. The clock has an 8 bell Cambridge Chimes unit, and a 4 Gong Westminster Chimes option.
Strikes the hours on a large 5th gong wire. Some history about the clock maker. LFS stands for Lorenz Furtwangler Söhne, a well-known German clock maker in Furtwangen. The company had a long history, founded in 1836 and dissolved in 1936. They made good quality clocks, but due to management problems and the decline in sales, they could not continue.
Beautiful wood case on this clock. The case is made of mahogany. Nice brass and lead made front door bezel with the small ball handle still in place. Securely attached to the case of the clock. The beveled glass is intact on the front, sides, and top. There are no chips, cracks, or missing pieces. Some minor separation of the seam of the case on the front bottom right. The back door is in place. The fabric and metal screen is on the door and the locking hinge is still in place and operates. The round wood legs are still in place. Good looking silver and black colored metal clock face. The numbers are done in black.
The hands match and look appropriate to the clock. Some finish loss to the clock face. The bells have a great sound to them doing the Cambridge Chimes. All the hammers are striking the bells as expected on the quarter hours.
Same thing happens with the Westminster Chimes on the 4 wire gong when on that setting. Also, has a switch that turns off the chime options, but whey would you want to do that? And the clock strikes the hours on the hour on the largest of the 5 wire gongs. The strike has a deep lasting sound to it. This is also a lever clock, so when you pull down on the lever, the most recent quarter hour chime and strike (if applicable) will play again. That function is operating as well. The bells have a nickel plating that give them a chromed look. Most of that finish is still in place. The 3 barreled chamber springs feel sound when wound. The clock has been running, striking, and chiming (on both the bells or the wire gongs) since we acquired it. No servicing or cleaning has bee performed on the movement.
The clock will come with a wind key. A ppears LFS fashioned this beautiful clock after the 8 Bell, 5 gong wire clock movements that Winterhalder and Hofmeier (W&H) started making in the 1880s to pay homage to them. Or maybe the other way around! Only difference between the mechanics of the two maker movements is that the LFS one is driven by springs in enclosed barreled chambers, whereas the W&H movements were fusee driven. This Antique LFS Chime Bracket Clock is 16-1/8" tall, by 13" across, by 7-5/8 wide. The clock face is 6.75 across. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
