Antique Seth Thomas Sonora Chimes 8d Mantle clock, Adamantine veneer, #1 Special

Offered here is an antique Seth Thomas Sonora Chimes 8 Day mantle clock in good working condition. It appears in the 1913 catalog as the Chime Clock No. 1, designated Special because of the plain design without gilt decoration. The clock belonged to my grandparents and then to my mom. The mahogany case is finished with the Adamantine veneer, patented in 1880 and used by Seth Thomas until 1917. Springs power the pendulum, quarter hour chimes and hourly strikes. Four bells and hammers create the Westminster chime sequence featuring four notes on the quarter hour, eight notes on the half hour, twelve notes on the three quarter hour, and 16 notes followed by the appropriate number of strikes on the hour.

The #3 key is double ended, one side appropriate for loading the springs and the other for adjusting speed. A lever on the side of the clock allows for silencing the chimes.

According to a page from the 1913 catalog, the 5 inch silvered dial is surrounded by a gold plated sash. Dimensions are 15" wide, 7" deep, 14 high. As shown in the photos, the adamantine finish has scattered losses.

The dial perforations show some wear. Included are the original key, pages copied from old Seth Thomas catalogues, and instructions for syncing the chimes and strikes. For questions or additional images, please ask.
