Cut and paste this utube link in order to hear the sound of the chimes. More about HAU Hamburg-Amerikanische Uhrenfabrik (HAU). HAC - Hamburg American Clock Company; for the English market (HAC). Originally Landsberger & Lang - was founded in 1876 when a Junghans family son-in-law, Paul Landenburger, left the Junghans organization. His factory was located in the Black Forest town, Schramburg, the same as Junghans (not actually in Hamburg). The two companies competed with similar products over the years they remained separate. Forced by financial difficulties, he had to ask for a loan from Junghans. After some legal disputes with Junghans a settlement was reached in 1883 and the original company Landsberger & Lang was converted into a corporation named Hamburg-Amerikanische Uhrenfabrik (HAU). In 1925 the number of employees of HAU was approximately 2,200 people. Forced by the losses due to inflation in 1925 a community of interests between Junghans, the Vereinigte Freiburger Uhrenfabriken and the HAU was founded in 1927. The plan to grow stronger economically was braked abruptly by a massive loss of equity of the companies involved. Finally Junghans took over the other two as the strongest company in 1930. Paul Landenberger became board member of Gebrüder Junghans AG. By 1939 the HAU name was no longer in use.
