For sale is an oak cased Garrard 8 day Savoy Westminster chiming mantel clock. It comes complete with original Garrard stamped key and chrome pendulum. As a bit of background, Garrard & Co were the Crown Jewellers who set up an engineering company as part of the war effort in 1914. In a later effort at diversification, they entered the market for high grade, mass produced clocks, with their first clock being launched in 1931. This clock dates to the very early-1930s and is an example of their original Westminster chiming clock with five rear hung hammers - evidenced by the rear plate stamped with provisional patent numbers (on later models, these patent numbers are no longer marked provisional).
Garrards early clocks were renowned for a high quality of engineering, and having serviced a number of them, I can certainly attest to that. Theyre beautifully crafted, solidly built, with thick front and rear plates (polished and snailed - see pictures).Wheels have five spokes, pendulum and key are chrome plated, even the fly wheels have a snailed finish... It is in excellent working order following a complete service (details below) and keeps time with a strong and steady tick.
It plays the Westminster chimes on the quarter hours and strikes the hours on the hour. The oak case is in very good condition. The are a couple of minor blemishes, specifically on the front arch above the 1 and on the rear door (at the top and near the hinge on the right). That said, the case still retains its shine and lustre after nearly 90 years.
The bevelled glass and bezel are in very good condition. The door opens and closes smoothly and shuts securely.
The rear door also hinges smoothly and latches tight. The dial is also in good condition. There are some minor markings commensurate with age and use, but no scratches or dent. The hands are well formed and straight, retaining the glossiness of their original paint. Numerals and minute divisions are well defined. The chime silent lever is placed at the 3 on the dial, and when used, stops both chime and strike functions. There is also a Strike Only function at the rear using a lever on the internal hammer mechanism. Dimensions are 43cm wide, 23.5cm high and 16.5cm deep.In terms of servicing, the movement was stripped down (see picture), cleaned using an ultrasonic bath and an horological cleaning solution. Pivots and pivot holes were checked for wear / roughness and polished as appropriate. The movement was then re-assembled and re-oiled using both heavy and medium clock oil.
The springs were removed from the barrels, cleaned and inspected. They were found to be in good order, so I simply re-oiled and refitted them.Notably, the original Garrard springs were still in use for the Strike and Chime. Time and Strike run for a full 8 days, as they should. The Chime spring ran for just over 7 days (24 hours a day, with no night time silencing). I debated whether to replace it, but in the end felt it better to keep the original, since it still was still giving a pretty solid performance.
In terms of repairing worn pivot holes, I noted that the clock had been re-bushed at an earlier service and the work was still perfectly fine. I did, however, think that their finish to the rear plate could be improved and so used the appropriate roller cutters to create oil sinks consistent in appearance to the original pivot holes. No new bushing work was required. It will be posted in brand new packaging, the pendulum / bob will be removed for transport and the springs let down. As an aside, its coming from a smoke and pet free home. It will also be set in beat for a properly level surface (in beat being a nice and evenly spaced tick-tock sound when the pendulum is swinging). However, should the journey to you affect that setting, or if its being placed on a not quite level surface, it may need adjusting. If you need it, Ill be happy to provide assistance. Its not a complicated process and Ill be happy to talk you through it. I want you to be really happy with your clock. If you have any questions that arent answered above, please dont hesitate to get in touch.Im happy to provide any additional information I can. This was illustrated in the excellent book Clockmaking in England and Wales in the Twentieth Century by Glanville & Wolmuth. The book was also used to provide some of the other detail above. If you have any interest in the subject of clockmaking, Id highly recommend it. Fantastic amount of information and photographs.
