This is a BEAUTIFUL SUPERIOR CONDITION example of a Seth Thomas WESTMINSTER CHIME Mantle Clock in wonderful 100% ALL ORIGINAL CONDITION! This is truly a great clock with an outstanding case with the original finish in superior condition, HIGH QUALITY EVERYTHING, ITS ORIGINAL silver dial with bronze raised numbers in one of the best condition weve ever seen. It is a very classy mantle clock in need of a warm loving home. It was made circa 1924. It has a signed "Seth Thomas Clock Co" 8-day time and CHIME movement (high quality complicated movement number 124 description below) which chimes WESTMINSTER CHIMES on the quarter-hour.
The movement runs very well and keeps good time. The movement was just cleaned, oiled, pivots polished and bushings added where needed. This clock will not need servicing for many years to come, and is ready for the next 100 years! This is a labor intensive service, with many clockmakers charging 250.00 and up.
We recommend having it oiled every 2 to 3 years to keep it in tip-top shape! The clock strikes on the quarter-hour and counts the hours on the hour on 5 chime rods with a beautiful sound. It plays 4 notes at the first ¼, 8 notes on the half hour, 12 notes on the ¾ hour and 16 notes plus strikes the hour on the hour on 5 chime rods with a mellow, beautiful sound. It is a very strong runner! The Seth Thomas Clock Company was begun in 1820 by Seth Thomas Sr.
And has been known for making high quality clocks. With this clock being ONE OF IT'S FINEST. See the article on this movement in the pictures below. The movement runs very well and keeps good time.
The name Seth Thomas is synonymous with high quality and good taste. Not always the first on the scene with the latest movement "improvement" or flashy case style, Seth Thomas was slow to adopt changes and only when the marketplace had given it acceptance to other companys' breakthrough advances would Seth Thomas slowly and carefully bring their high quality clocks to the marketplace. The results, however, were always the same. When the Seth Thomas clock arrived it was an instant success and it captured the market. As the years have passed, the quality of Seth Thomas clocks has been proven over and over. The case is also very beautiful with its beautiful finish! It is in beautiful condition with even the finish. I doubt if the clock has been worked too much as the screws and screw holes for the movement are tight, with no additional screw holes. The SILVER dial is all original in outstanding condition. With its S T hands. We are very excited about this clock. It has an adjustment for fast and slow on the dial which can be turned by the small end of the Seth Thomas heavy duty double ended key, this way you dont need to take the clock down from its shelf to adjust it for slow and fast. The metal around the dial (heavy solid brass) is original with the original finish. Retains its original heavy bevel glass. The catch holding the glass door is tight! Has its S T hands! This clock is probably a one family clock to retain all of the original pieces as well as being in superior condition.Has its original back door! Retains its label on the bottom and was named Oxford. The movement is signed (see picture). Complete with the ORIGINAL Seth Thomas pendulum and a signed Seth Thomas American heavy duty double ended key. Very rare for a clock to retain its original pendulum.
The key has one end to wind the clock and the other to adjust it for slow and fast. There is also a place for silent and chime on the dial. The finish is nearly perfect. The clock measures 10 inches high, 8 inches deep and 20 inches wide. These antique clocks amaze me - could you imagine any other consumer product still working after nearly 80 years! And the truly amazing thing with proper care they will work easily past the next 100 years, with this clock going well beyond that!
