Smiths St Katherine Dual Chime Mantel Clock Westminster/Whittn Acoustic Speaker

A superb fully serviced Smiths St Katherine dual chime mantel clock featuring the desirable acoustic resonator system, beautifully figured bird's-eye maple front, pearwood casework and rich Westminster and Whittington chimes. This is a particularly attractive and less commonly encountered version of the Smiths St Katherine mantel clock. Unlike standard Smiths rod-chime mantel clocks, this model is fitted with a distinctive gramophone-style acoustic resonator chamber, designed to enrich and amplify the chime tone in a similar way to a small speaker cabinet. The result is a compact British mantel clock with far more presence and sound quality than the average mid-century clock. The case is also a major feature, with a highly decorative bird's-eye maple front contrasted beautifully by pearwood to the top and sides.

Smiths St Katherine mechanical mantel clock. Westminster, Whittington chime and silent selection. Gramophone-style acoustic resonator sound chamber. Fully stripped, cleaned, serviced and adjusted. Case carefully restored and polished.

The Smiths St Katherine was one of Smiths' more stylish post-war British mantel clocks, combining a quality mechanical movement with elegant decorative casework. This example is one of the more interesting variants, fitted with a dual chime movement and an acoustic resonator chamber beneath the chime rods. The resonator is not just a decorative feature. It acts as a sound chamber, helping to project and deepen the tone of the chime. This gives the clock a fuller and warmer sound than many standard rod-chime mantel clocks of similar size. These acoustic resonator examples are much less frequently seen than standard Smiths mantel clocks and make a superb choice for anyone wanting a British mechanical clock with both visual appeal and a distinctive chime sound. Smiths was one of Britain's most important clock and instrument manufacturers throughout the twentieth century. The company produced a wide range of domestic clocks, watches, automotive instruments and precision equipment, becoming a familiar name in British homes for decades.

During the post-war period, Smiths produced some of its most recognisable mantel clocks, often combining reliable British-made mechanical movements with attractive veneered wooden cases. The St Katherine range sits among the more desirable Smiths mantel clocks, particularly when found in this dual chime acoustic configuration. This clock has been fully prepared by Mahn & Co and has undergone a comprehensive mechanical service and sympathetic case restoration. Plates, wheels, pinions and levers cleaned. Pivot holes cleaned and pegged.

Mainspring barrels removed, cleaned and correctly refitted. Old oil and residue removed. Chime and strike trains checked and adjusted. Acoustic resonator chamber cleaned and retained. Case carefully cleaned, revived and polished. Clock tested over multiple days for reliable running and chime performance. The clock has been running reliably following service and is chiming correctly. The bird's-eye maple front has excellent figuring and the pearwood top and sides give the case a warm, high-quality appearance. As a vintage mechanical clock, there will be minor age-related signs of use, but overall this is a very attractive and well-presented example.
